"Boosting Minds and Bodies: The Vital Role of Physical Education at Astor International School"

Having physical education in the classroom offers a range of benefits that contribute to students’ overall well-being and academic success. Here at Astor International School, we encourage physical activity at all times, and we teach the International Primary Curriculum which includes physical education subject areas.

Two boys at the front carry colorful balls, navigating through a playful setup of chairs, foam blocks, and lines on the floor. In the background, other students cheer and wait their turn in front of a large, vibrant world map mural. The room is filled with energy and smiles as the children engage in physical activity, fostering teamwork and motor skills.

Firstly, having physical education as part of the curriculum promotes physical fitness and develops a child’s gross motor skills. It contributes to cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, flexibility, and overall physical well-being. Having various physical activities allows students to develop fundamental motor skills such as running, jumping, throwing, and catching. Creating an obstacle course for the kids to develop these skills adds a fun element to their learning experience. Furthermore, these skills are foundational for participating in sports and other physical activities throughout life.

They are on a green artificial turf, split into two teams, and playing with blue soccer balls. Some students are actively kicking the ball while others wait for their turn. The scene is set against a backdrop of trees and a small hill, with a basketball hoop visible in the middle of the area. The children are wearing casual athletic outfits, and their joyful expressions reflect the fun and engaging nature of the activity.

Secondly, physical education is fun, and it reduces stress and anxiety in students. Physical activities release endorphins which are natural mood elevators and stress relievers. It also allows students to physically move away from the classroom. Moreover, movements during physical education lessons can help reduce feelings of boredom. It also allows students to have fun in various sports and games with their friends.

Thirdly, physical education encourages students to have healthy habits and improves body image and self-esteem. Physical education classes educate students about the importance of regular physical activity and encourage them to adopt a healthy lifestyle from a young age.

Offering physical education in the classroom supports the overall well-being of students. It contributes to a holistic approach to education by addressing the physical, social, emotional and mental aspects of students’ development. Incorporating physical education into the school curriculum not only supports students' physical health but also enhances their academic performance, social skills, and overall quality of life. It plays a crucial role in promoting a balanced and healthy lifestyle from an early age.
