What smells more festive than fresh homemade gingerbread baking in the oven?! At Astor International School, students made gingerbread men cookies for New Year. The recipe is easy and children will love making and decorating these traditional gingerbread cookies.
The children loved getting their hands messy making the dough. It’s a hands-on recipe which children always enjoy and it means you don’t need any special equipment like mixers to make them. In addition, the children love rolling out the dough and cutting out the gingerbread man/women shapes.
INGREDIENTS
350g plain flour
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 tsp ground ginger
100g butter
175g light muscovado sugar
4 tbsp golden syrup
1 large egg
INSTRUCTIONS
Pre-heat the oven to 190c and prepare your baking trays.
Add flour and butter into a mixing bowl. Use your fingertips to rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
Next, add the sugar, ginger, bicarbonate of soda and mix all together.
Following that, add the egg, golden syrup and mix it all.
Once everything has been mixed together, you will have a smooth dough. Squeeze it together so it stops crumbling and make nice balls of gingerbread dough.
Use a rolling pin, roll the balls of dough out. Use the gingerbread man cutter to cut out gingerbread men.
Bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes until they become a slightly darker shade.
