What a Wonderful World

At Astor International School, we believe that fostering curiosity and an understanding of the world around us is one of the most valuable gifts we can give our students. Learning how our planet works not only enhances their knowledge but also instils a sense of wonder, responsibility, and connection to the environment. This term, our Year 5 and 6 students have dived into these ideas through the IPC unit, What a Wonderful World.

The unit has been an exciting journey of discovery, allowing students to explore various scientific concepts about the natural world. Among the highlights was learning about the phases of the moon. Students marvelled at how the moon’s position relative to the Earth and the Sun creates its changing shape. The students created an artwork to display how the moon waxes and wanes. This hands-on learning brought the science of astronomy to life in ways that were both engaging and memorable.

Another fascinating topic we explored was the types of clouds and their role in weather patterns. From fluffy cumulus clouds to towering cumulonimbus formations, students learned how clouds provide clues about the weather and even serve as a window into understanding the water cycle. They conducted observations outside, identified cloud types, and connected these to real-world weather conditions. These activities encouraged our students to look up at the sky with fresh eyes and a new appreciation for meteorology.

One of the most exciting aspects of ‘What a Wonderful World’ was the seamless connection between science and the arts. In art lessons, students used their knowledge of the phases of the moon and types of clouds to create stunning works of art. They crafted moon phase diagrams and painted vivid cloud formations. These projects allowed students to express their understanding creatively while reinforcing their learning. The integration of art not only made the lessons more dynamic but also highlighted the beauty of the natural world in tangible, inspiring ways.

Through this unit, our Year 5 and 6 students at Astor International School have not only expanded their scientific knowledge but also deepened their sense of wonder and curiosity about the world. They’ve learned to see connections between disciplines, blending science and art into a cohesive and meaningful learning experience. More importantly, they’ve taken steps toward becoming informed and thoughtful global citizens who recognise the importance of understanding and caring for the planet.
