The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) includes Personal Learning Goals and Learning Goals. So what is the difference?
The Learning Goals are the objectives of each lesson from the following learning areas:
History
Geography
Science
Art
Physical Education
Technology
Music
Society
International
Some examples are:
Milepost 1 unit ‘People of the Past’ Music Learning Goal:
1.02 Know a number of other pieces of music
Milepost 2 unit ‘Bright Sparks!’ Science Learning Goal:
2.01a Be able to carry out simple investigations
2.01b Be able to prepare a simple investigation which is fair, with one changing factor
2.01c Be able to predict the outcome of investigations
Milepost 3 unit ‘Bake It’ International Learning Goal:
3.02 Know about the key features related to the lives of people in the host country and/or, where appropriate, other countries in which they have lived
Through each unit some learning goals are identified as key and those are the learning goals the teacher assesses.
The Personal Learning Goals represent the attributes that IPC believes a child will find essential in the 21st Century. These personal learning goals help children to develop the qualities that will enable them to be at ease with the continually changing context of their lives. The IPC offers several personal learning goals where schools can choose the ones that match their context, the schools vision and mission and the student body.
At Astor we selected Personal Learning Goals:
Be Internationally Minded
Knowing who I am, knowing where I fit in the world and respecting all.
Be Responsible
I think about my choices, make good decisions and do the right thing.
Be Collaborative
I try to help others and work as a team.
Be Adaptable
I change my behaviour and ideas to suit different situations.
Be Respectful
I treat people and things the way I want to be treated.
Be Reflective
I reflect on what I have learnt and what I would like to change.
Be Curious
I ask why things are as they are and collect evidence to support my ideas.
Be Resilient
I keep trying even when things are difficult.
We use these personal goals to encourage our students to display these behaviours in and outside of the classroom. To try to draw attention to these personal goals when a situation arises. We also have Astor Awards where we acknowledge students who have displayed these personal goals.
